I hate grading. I do it because I have to, but I hate it.

I try to have the kids help as much as I can, because the immediate feedback is good for them and because it makes my life easier, but there are some things kids just can’t (and shouldn’t) grade, and when that happens, I look for ways to streamline the process. One of the things I always do before I start to climb the paper mountain is create a grading scale. You know, 13.5/15 is an A, 12/15 is a B… yeah. And, while it doesn’t take long — I am a math teacher, after all — and I have some point totals memorized, I still like to have it written out in front of me (on a sticky note) while I grade for those moments when I just can’t think anymore. Then, I’ll stick the sticky note it to the answer key for all of those late papers that straggle in.

Instead of writing it down, I can use the Grade It! app, which allows you to enter in a point total (up to 999), then calculates the percentage and grading scale for you. It also allows you to customize your grading scale, so that you can decide what percentage is a B+, a B-, etc. Pretty cool stuff!

Put in any point total between 1 and 999...
Put in any point total between 1 and 999…
...and get a grading scale!
…and get a grading scale!
Customize your grading scale.
Customize your grading scale.
And, email the grading scale to your colleagues right from the app.
